1D

Welcome to Class 1D. Your class teacher is Mrs. Dowker. Also working with you in the class are Mrs. Thistlethwaite, Mr Miller and Mrs Shaw. On Tuesday morning Mrs Hunter teaches in 1D. 

 

Our topic this half term is ’commotion in the ocean’. We are going to be learning about the United Kingdom, naming the countries and the capital cities. We will learn to name and locate the world’s continents and oceans. We will use simple sewing techniques to create a rainbow fish and make a moving picture using levers. We are going to have a joint unit with the Reception classes where we learn about pirates. We will also learn about the history of the RNLI and how to be safe around water.

We have been learning about different sea creatures. We have created a 3D under the sea world using a shoebox.

Year 1 have been enjoying a Seaside theme day. We came dressed in our summer clothes and made sandwiches and iced biscuites for a delicious lunch like in the story The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch. In the afternoon the sun came out and we enjoyed our picnic outside and played lots of games.

Pirate Zoe came to visit Year 1. We loved sharing lots of fantastic seaside and pirate books.

In Year 1 everyone has made a cress head. We had lots of fun making them. We have taken them home over the half term to look after.

Year 1's Minibeast Theme Day. We were minibeast detectives and found lots of minibeasts in different parts of our school environment. We had lots of fun.

In R.E. we have been learning about Buddhism. We have retold the Buddhist story of Siddartha and the Swan. We talked about caring for all living things.

We have been learning about spring. One of the children found a nest and brought it into school to share with the rest of the class. It still had some shell left in it from when the chicks had hatched.

This term we have been learning about plants; the different parts of a plant and what they need to grow.

During the summer term we have been learning to travel on small and large equipment. We are really proud of ourselves, some of us even managed to climb up the rope. Well done everyone.

This term, in gym we are learning about using different types of equipment. Learning different ways of travelling on the equipment, safely.

We are very proud of our fantastic work. These are some of the displays from our work this term. We learned about the Vikings and the history of the seaside during our history week. We have created a fairy tale land using our art work and writing. We have written our own poems using rhyming couplets for Diplodocus Dan. We hope you enjoy looking at our displays as much as we do.

We have been learning about capacity and volume. We have been filling and correctly describing containers as being full, empty or half full. We measured a litre of water and estimated if a container's capacity was 1 litre. We found that it was not just tall containers that had a capacity of 1 litre, but also some short, wide containers.

Sport Relief day in Year 1. We had lots of fun running around the track with Miss. Metcalfe and practising our skipping with Mrs Dowker. It made us hot and sweaty! We know that exercise is important to stay healthy.

This is our fairy tale castle in 1D. We have lots of different fairy tales to read and enjoy. We act out the stories using the puppets and masks. We do lots of writing when we are in the castle, we have written about the different characters and stories.

We have made our own bear picture by using different type of fabrics. we had to cut very carefully.

In numeracy we have been learning to turn a whole, half and quarter turn. We drew a clock face on the ground using chalk and turned a variety of whole, half and quarter turns and said which number we were facing.

We have been using the story of Goldilocks and the Three bears. We worked together to retell the story using role play. Each pair of children retold a different part of the story. What fantastic work for everyone in 1D!

Betty Balloon came to Torrisholme School as part of our celebrations for World Book Day. The children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 had a fabulous time. Betty Balloon told us three stories using balloons; The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Gingerbread Man and Pirate Pete. The children joined in with the repetitive phrases and some children were chosen to be one of the characters using Betty's balloons.

We have been learning to weigh items using standard units. We used cubes that are 1 g each as well as weights that are 1g, 5g, 10g and 20g.

We have been using role play to retell the story of The Enormous Turnip. We used our learning muscles to work together decided on our parts and what we would do for each part of the story.

We have been learning to measure height and length using standard units. We worked with our ELF partner to draw 2 fairy tale characters, thinking carefully which character would be taller or shorter. We then chose the equipment we would need to measure their height and carefully measured them making sure that we started measuring at the correct point.

Year 1 went to the Lowry theatre, Salford to watch Shrek the Musical. It was brilliant, awesome and fantastic!!! We had lots of fun.

We have been learning about fossils and that we know about dinosaurs because of the fossils that have been found. We used clay to make a tile. Then we used tools to cut into the clay to make a fossil shape.

Snakes and Gecko Visit Year 1!! We learned lots of facts about reptiles.

We have been using our knowledge of 3D shapes to create shapes using marshmallows or plasticine and wooden skewers. We made information cards for the shape; naming the shape and listing the shape's properties. We had to carefully count the number of edges and vertices.

We have been making a 3D dinosaur world using paper that we have folded, curled, rolled and twisted. We used our imagination to think of things that we thought might be in a dinosaur world. We made trees, caves, rocks, waterfalls and volcanoes. Then we thought of a dinosaur and made it out of paper. We had lots of fun!

Dinosaur Discovery at Torrisholme School. Last Wednesday Mrs Penney asked Year 1 to investigate some mysterious finds in Bramble Corner. We found dinosaur bones and fossils! At present we are learning about newspaper reports so that we can produce our own. Watch this space.

On Monday 14th December we all dressed up as Victorians for our Victorian Christmas theme day.

During our Victorian Christmas theme day we learned that alot of the Christmas celebrations that take place today were started by the Victorians. We made peg dolls as a homemade gift, cornucopias to fill with sweets for on the tree and a small Christmas. We had lots of fun and used lots of glitter!
