Welcome back to the final term of Year 5!! Our topic is rivers this half term. We will be learning about the source and mouth of the River Lune and looking at a range of rivers from around the world. The children will learn about erosion and investigate this using sand. In art, children will sketch the River Lune and paint their drawings using water colour techniques.  Our literacy work will be based around The Wind in the Willows and the children will also be writing their own river poem using personification. In DT, we will be designing and constructing bridges to fulfil a specific design brief. Ukulele continues and PE is orienteering and athletics.
I am looking forward to this term as the weather hopefully starts to brighten up and we can plan lots of activities outdoors.
Tuesday 19th July: Y5 trip to Happy Mount Park; fun, games, chips and ice-cream as a reward for winning the Enterprise week challenge, 9:00am - 3:00pm.
Hats off to the children who graduated from the Children's University.

Jonathan Edwards look out - our triple jumping is awesome!
We recreated a river using sand and water. The children discussed these scientific processes: erosion, transportation and deposition.
Linked to our new topic, Splash, we have worked collaboratively to create collages of a river. After writing some amazing rivers poems in Literacy, with personification, assonance and metaphor, we decorated those for display. We hope you'll be impressed with our efforts!
Year 5 have signed up for the RHS rocket experiment 2016. 2kg of rocket seeds flew to space with Tim Peake and spent some time at the International Space Station. We have now planted 100 of these seeds, alongside 100 normal rocket seeds, to conduct an experiment into the effects of space travel on plants. Unfortunately, they had to be sown today, but children in the class will get a chance to measure and record results as the 35 day experiment progresses. Watch this space for updates!

Our lovely Aztec feast; thank you to all the parents that contributed and a massive well done to all the fantastic children!

Thank you to everyone who supported the 'Say it with fudge' stall at the Christmas Fair. We raised £729.97 to be split between the PTFA and Year 5. We are currently discussing with the children what they would like to spend their half of the money on.

Our trip to Lancaster Castle. What a fantastic time we had. We were able to put our knowledge about castles to the test by recognising features of the castle and answering questions. We learnt so much more about castles and the history of Lancaster castle which will help us in our 'Dungeons and Dragons' topic.
Somewhere over the rainbow - we managed to sing and play at the same time! Well done all!
Important information - trip to Lancaster Castle on Thursday 26th November.
We made Top Trumps then played them against/with 1M. It was lovely to see the children working together and 5G having a real-life purpose for their work.
We made Top Trumps and played them against 1M. What a lovely afternoon.
Our space poetry - check out the last group; incredible!

Our space poetry
We wrote space poems as a group. See if you can find: alliteration, personification, similes, metaphors and powerful language.
Great start to art week - Vincent Van Gogh style!
What an amazing night - just a shame we didn't see any stars!
We had a lovely trip to Spaceport and the weather held for the 'Ferry across the Mersey'.
Our first topic this year is 'Space: the final frontier.' We will be finding out about the different planets in space and how the Earth fits into the Solar System. We can confirm that the space sleepover will be happening on Thursday 15th October. This will be followed by a space exhibition in the school hall on Friday 16th October, where parents can come and see the fantastic work the children have been doing.Â
We tried to work out how far from the sun each planet was - here it is to scale. 1cm = 1,000,000 miles!!
Gymnastics
We put together sequences that had to contain a counter balance and a counter tension balance. See what you think.

The children participated in collaboration activities that tested their ability to solve problems, as well as work in a group. I'm sure you'll agree it looks like a fantastic day.
