We have spent the first 2 weeks after Christmas continuing our 'Dungeons and Dragons' topic. We have had a great time making castles with a working drawbridge and portcullis. We had a visit from a medieval cook (Miss Stalker) to help us understand life working in a castle. We also looked at other roles within a castle: knight, squire, gong farmer, archer, servant, Lord, Lady, messenger, butler and chaplain etc. We used what we learnt about the roles and parts of a castle to create an information page.
Next week we start our new topic 'Amazing Aztecs'. This topic will run until Easter. Watch this space for examples and information about the work we have done.
We have been learning about forces. We had a fantastic afternoon investigating the affect of up-thrust and gravity on objects. We found out that up-thrust and gravity are equal when an object is floating. An object will sink if the weight of the object is greater than the density of the water that it replaces when put in the water. We also investigated how the density of a liquid affects up-thrust. We dropped a marble into water, vegetable oil and syrup and noticed the marble took longer to sink in the syrup. This is because the syrup is denser so the up-thrust force is greater slowing the marble down. Do you know why the marble didn't float in the syrup?
This week, Y5 have been busy creating the 'latest addition to the Christmas decoration market'...the Glitterball! This beautiful decoration can be yours for just £1.00. It comes in a range of glittering colours and can be used to decorate your tree, light up your hallway, bring glamour to your mantelpiece or even as a unique table centre piece. The options are endless! Pick up your glitterball in class 5S at our Christmas Fair.
What a fantastic first half-term we had in year 5! Our 'Space-the final frontier' topic was a huge success, which the children loved.
We have just finished our mini topic '100 years ago'. It was wonderful to see children tackling pounds, shillings and pence together ignored to set up a market stall. thank you to everyone who got involved in this fantastic event.
Our new topic 'Dungeons and Dragons' has started. the children are going to write a newspaper report about a dragon attack, using scenes from 'How to train your dragon'. The children have written letters to mrs Penney persuading her to let us go to the castle. due to the fantastic persuasive writing styles the children used, the letters were a success and we have booked a trip to Lancaster castle on Wednesday 26th November.
It will soon be enterprise week, where the children will be making baubles and jigsaw wreaths to sell at the Christmas Fair with the intention of making a profit. We are excited about the events leading up to Christmas and are sure to have another successful half-term.
