Erupting Lemons

Lemons...Erupting? YES!!

Following our work on pH and reactions with bicarbonate of soda, we wondered if we could recreate this directly within a lemon itself. And yes you can!

Lemon juice is acidic due to its naturally occurring citric acid. When you add bicarbonate of soda, and a splash of washing up liquid, you create a chemical reaction.

Small, frothy, foamy bubbles.

Bubbles of carbon dioxide and sodium citrate are formed which create the frothy, foamy, bubbly eruption.
