Elastic Fantastic

This little activity is filled with stretchy, squishy, squashy tension. Elastic torsion in fact!

With sheer determination and dexterous fingers, we can use the properties of elastic to create colossal catapults.

The elastic torsion of the twisted elastic bands creates the force for the catapult firing arm. Elastic can be stretched and squashed but wants to return to its normal state. By exerting a twisting force on the elastic, you can create torsion, a twisted tension. This is the principle behind the firing mechanism, which we discovered today.

So how far will our catapults be able to fire marshmallows? 

Who would have thought lollipop sticks and elastic bands could result in something so powerful?
