Runway Visitor Centre
What an amazing day we had at the Runway Visitor Centre. After (finally!) settling into our coach seats, 55, very excited, Year 1 children and 14, very excited, staff and volunteers headed off down the M6 towards Manchester. After encountering some heavy traffic along the way we reached our destination still in good time to enjoy an early lunch and catch our first glimpses of the airport's busy runway. Following lunch and that all important toilet visit, we were treated to a jam packed itinerary which taught us everything we needed to know about air travel, different types of aircraft and the many and varied roles undertaken by the staff who work at the airport. We climbed aboard real aircraft and took on the roles of pilot, co-pilot and engineer inside a DC10 flight deck. We counted the wheels on Concorde and learnt how it travelled at 1350mph! We watched loads of different aircraft (some big and some small) take off and land, and waved at the pilots and passengers as they taxied past our vantage point on the 'mound'. The children behaved impeccably all day and were an absolute credit to our school - very well done to you all!
