Writing Task  4 - Titanic Survivor Description

Imagine you were a passenger on board the Titanic when it sank. Write a diary entry detailing what happened.

You might want to research other survivor recount to help you understand what it was really like the night the Titanic sank.  

What to describe in your survivor re-count:

  • What you were doing before being alerted to the boat sinking?
  • How were you alerted? Who by? Noise?
  • How did you react? Where did you go? Did anybody help you?
  • What was the atmosphere like on the deck when you got outside? How busy was it? How did you feel? Were you having to grip on to things to avoid being thrown overboard?
  • How did you get on to a life boat?
  • What was the atmosphere like on the life boat? What could you hear? See? Feel?
  • Describe the view of the Titanic from the life boat.
  • What was it like watching it sink? How did you feel?

This is a brilliant opportunity to use emotive language, to create atmosphere using short, dramatic sentences for effect, use expanded noun phrases and other descriptive features (similes, metaphors) to make the reader feel like they were there with you.

Remember to plan your writing before you begin and edit your work when you have finished.
