D.T. Week - Food
Vol au vent HQ
We've had a throwback to the '80s here in Year 4 this week! And we have LOVED it!!
Our DT Week focus has centred around this French puff pastry classic. We have explored its structure and how it is essentially a light, airy cavity that can be filled with a whole range of savoury and sweet fillings.
We were tasked with designing and making a savoury and a sweet vol au vent that Hiccup and the other boys would like to enjoy on completion of the Dragon Initiation Programme and celebrate their acceptance as members of the Hairy Hooligan tribe.
Take a look at our food preparation skills...
we've sliced, chopped, ripped, shredded, grated, zested, peeled, mixed, whisked, whipped, scooped and spooned with perfection this week, improving our skills from one day to the next.
Not a soggy bottom in sight! True wafts of air!
Our first attempt - do our filling designs taste nice?
Do they taste as we expected?
Are the flavour combinations pleasant?
Is the appearance attractive and appealing?
Do I need to make a change to my filling? How?
Do I need to consider my presentation? If so, how?

Our second attempt...
Changes were made!
Ingredients were prepared more finely, smaller pieces to fit more neatly in our pastry cavities. The mix of ingredients in some fillings was improved to even out flavours, add more flavour or simply swap to a tastier alternative.
The presentation was improved dramatically. We eat with our eyes - first impressions count for a lot and we wanted out vol au vents to look as delicious as they tasted.

Check out our stunning show-stopping presentation designs!

We enjoyed our own creations but also tried the flavour combinations of another. We considered how they had presented their fillings and how their flavours worked together.
All in all, our tummies have enjoyed a very tasty week indeed!
