Exploring and making shell-structures
Deconstructing boxes!
We have enjoyed learning about shell-structures, especially food and gift packaging (especially after Christmas!) We all brought a box into school and had fun deconstructing it to give us clues as to how a box is made.
Drawing a net of our box
When we deconstructed our boxes we were amazed to discover the strange shapes! We know about tabs and how important they are for a 3D box to keep its shape.
Drawing our nets was a challenge and we found it helpful to draw sahpe after shape rather than drawing the outside.
Testing nets
Our task today, was to test different nets to see if they could make a cube.
Some nets did and although we could construct each one and try it out, by the end of the session we could work out in our head which ones would make a cube!
If a net didn't make a cube, we could explain clearly why. Some nets didn't have enough squares and some overlapped!
