Maths
Place Value
The class have started Year 5 maths by consolidating their understanding of place value. This explores the value each digit holds within a number and how these change when we add or subtract another number. The children have been working very hard on this and are showing their growing confidence each day!
Addition and Subtraction
The class have now moved on to their next maths topic of addition and subtraction. The children started by exploring mental strategies to calculate certain questions and have now moved on to the formal written methods. To begin this focus, we used counters to physically make the exchange that can take place with some calculations.

Multiplication and Division
Applying their knowledge of multiplication, the children then explored square numbers by physically forming arrays with counters. The class was able to see why 22 is equal to 2 x 2 and why this also equals 4.

The class moved on from squared numbers by looking at cube numbers. They created 3D models that represented cube numbers and their associated calculations, e.g. 33 equals 3 x 3 x 3 which also equals 27.
