Frame Structures
The children explored frame structures and the shapes that are included to keep them strong. The children analysed chairs, umbrellas, houses and our very own outdoor classroom.
Year 5 were challenged to form a structure that could support the weight of a single can of beans, using a single sheet of card and a short strip of tape.
Following some discussion, the children created small 2D shapes using paper straws and metal wire. They began by making squares and triangles to see which was stronger. They then reinforced their square frames using triangulation.
Year 5 began their structure project by first sketching the frame structure and skin of the lighthouse model they are going to be creating.
To begin their building, the children accurately measured the strips of wood needed for the frame, as well as triangular supports for the joins.
The children then used their cutting skills to accurately and safely cut up their strips of word.
The children glued their pieces together to begin forming the base and tower of their lighthouses. They used triangular supports to strengthen the corners too.
Once the towers were constructed, Year 5 then formed their electrical circuits, including connecting wires to an LED and battery, as well as creating their own switch.
They then attached this circuit to their tower to complete their lighthouses.
