Welcome to the reception page!

Our two reception classes are;
Class RR - Mrs Robinson and Mrs Blane
Class RK - Mrs Kippax and Miss Davies

This is our very own page where we will share the exciting things we have been up to including photos, videos and children's work. We will also provide some ideas and links for helping your child at home. Keep checking for regular updates! no

We are dressed up as Pirates for our end of year party!

Our water festival was so much fun! We worked in teams solving problems and playing games involving lots of water! Check out the photos below;

We have been learning about plants. We know about each part of a plant and it's job. We also know what plants need to help them grow. We have planted beans in clear cups which means we can see the roots really clearly.

Our exciting trip to Leighton Moss!
We had such a brilliant day at Leighton Moss. We hunted for minibeast, dipped for pond creatures, made smelly nature potions, went on a nature walk and watched for birds. The weather even brightened up and we managed to eat dinner outside on the picnic benches. Check out the pictures underneath;
Minibeast Topic!
We have been learning about minibeasts! We know lots and lots of facts and have really enjoyed finding insects outside and discussing them with our friends. We even have our very own caterpillars and tadpoles in our classroom!
A visit from the Giant Land Snail!
Today we met a giant land snail! It was very exciting and we even all got a chance to hold it - it was a little slimy. A huge thanks to Reuben from class RK for bringing him in!
Minibeast Creations
We have even been making minibeasts in the creative area! The children chose the resources thinking carefully about shape and colour. They then attached the resources using glue and cellotape. Here are a few examples of some great minibeast creations!
Our Local Area

We have been learning about our local area. We have made some shops from Morecambe, Lancaster and Torrisholme in the creative area.

Handa's Surprise!

We have tasted the 7 delicious fruits from Handa's story. We discussed the taste and which fruits we liked best.

We know the Handa Surprise story off by heart. We have been retelling the story using the story tray.

We have been learning lots of new songs in music lessons with Mrs Hunter and Mrs Green! Here is Dr Knickerbocker - enjoy!

Super Safari Topic!!

We are having so much fun and learning lots about our new topic Africa and Safari Animals. The children know lots of facts about different animals. We know that other places in the world, like Africa, are different to where we live. The children have been role playing in our safari jeep taking it in turns to be the tour guide. We have also been making African necklaces in the creative area.

World Book Day!

We celebrated World Book Day! At certain times in the day the bell rang to DROP EVERYTHING AND READ! Sometimes we read as a class and other times the children chose books to read. We love reading!

Betty Balloon!

We have had a visit from Betty Balloon! She told us three brilliant stories using balloon characters. We joined in with words and actions. Some of us even helped out at the front. Check out the pictures below;

Chinese New Year!

We have been learning about Chinese New Year! We know lots about Chinese New Year traditions, we have made lucky packets and Chinese dragons. Check out the pictures below of us making and tasting Chinese food and having our very own Chinese parade with a dancing dragon and drums!

Healthy Living!

We have made fruit kebabs! We washed our hands first to get rid of the germs, used a knife safely to chop the fruit and carefully threaded it onto a kebab stick. They were very yummy and healthy too! We know we should eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day.

We have been learning and practising how to brush our teeth properly and how important it is to clean each tooth. We know that sugar is bad for our teeth and food gets stuck in the small gaps. We know we should brush our teeth for 2 minutes.

We have even had a visit from two dental nurses! They taught us more about our teeth and about their job. We enjoyed trying on the gloves and masks that the dentist wears!

People Who Help Us Topic!

We have been learning about the different people who help us and how they help us. We have learnt about different occupations including police officers, vets, nurses, doctors, postal workers and firefighters. Take a look below at some of our work and exciting experiences linked to 'People Who Help Us'.

We have been using the equipment, tools and resources in our creative area to make fire engines.

We have each junk modelled an emergency vehicle. We selected the shapes we needed to represent parts of the vehicle and attached them together using cellotape. We have chosen the appropriate colours to paint our vehicles.

During role play as police officers we answered the phones and wrote an incident report. We used our phonics to sound out and write the day, time, place and incident.

We had a visit from two police officers who told us all about their role in helping us, their uniform and vehicles. We even got to try on some uniform and see the police car. The siren was very noisy!

We have had such a great first term in Reception at Torrisholme school! Here we are on our last day before the Christmas holidays

Thank you for coming to watch our nativity performance of 'A Miracle in Town!'

Writing and Posting Letters to Santa!

Here we are walking to post our letters to Santa. We had to wrap up warm as it was very wet and windy. It didn't stop us having fun and completing our journey - we just splashed in the puddles on the way!

Our new topic is WINTER AND COLD PLACES!

Using our scissor skills we have been creating snowflakes. We hung them in our frozen castle.

We have been role playing in the Frozen Castle. We have been preparing for 'coronation day' party by cooking meals, laying the table and dressing smartly. We have even written our own invites to tell people about the event in the castle.

Look at our winter creations! We have been improving our ability to choose, assemble and attach resources to make realistic representations. We have also been thinking about the paint colours we choose.

We have been learning to add in maths! We know how to use objects to help us and to count two groups "altogether" to add. We have even begun covering the first amount of objects and then counting on to add. Here are some pictures of our addition work linked to Frozen. We used play dough 'snowballs' and Kristoff's ice blocks to help.

We raised money for children in need on our 'be a hero' day!

Baking Biscuits!

During our fireworks theme we baked some biscuits. We know to wash our hands before touching any ingredients. We each had a turn at creaming the fat and sugar, sieving the flour, rolling the dough and cutting the dough. We put our biscuits in the oven to bake and once cooled decorated them to look like fireworks!

Art Week!

We have had so much fun and have been working so hard during Art Week! We have looked at and recreated work from three artists; Pollock, Mondrian and Miro. We have also explored colour mixing on pallets to make colour wheels and with our hands. Here we are in action over the week;

We are learning 2D shape names and terms to describe them. We are learning how many sides and corners each shape has. Look at our shape pictures we have created independently!

We are practising our number recognition to 20 and accurate counting everyday. Here we are outdoors ordering the number tiles and counting out pebbles to match.

We are enjoying using the ICT Suite! We have been learning how to use the mouse and keyboard to interact with different computer programs.

Golden Bear
This is golden bear! Each class have their very own Golden Bear who lives in their classroom throughout the week. Each Friday the teacher chooses a child from the winning team to take Golden Bear home for the weekend. He takes his sleepover bag and his diary so we can all read about Golden Bears adventures on Monday morning when he returns.

Our Routines

We have enjoyed our first two weeks at school. We are now familiar with some of our school routines. In the morning we know to hang our coats up, unpack our belongings and sit down on the carpet for handwriting and the register. We know how to line up and walk around school quietly and smartly. We enjoy playtime outside on the playground and healthy snack time in our classroom. We have our packed lunches and hot school meals in the hall. We are getting better at remembering all of our things for home time too. Here are some pictures of us showing off our new routines;

Our Classrooms

We have been learning how to work in each area of our classroom. Take a look at the pictures and captions below to see us in action.
