We’ve had a fantastic week getting creative with our writing and exploring a brand-new book! We kicked things off by collecting interesting words and phrases, sorting them, and talking about what some of the new vocabulary meant. After watching a clip of a stormy sea, we imagined what it would be like to be there—thinking about what we might see, hear, smell, touch, or taste, and how it would make us feel. We added adjectives to bring our ideas to life and turned them into powerful noun phrases.
Then we took a close look at the front cover of our new book, The Mousehole Cat, making predictions, asking questions, and sharing what we could see. After listening to the opening pages, we picked out words and phrases we found interesting and used them to create detailed drawings, adding our labelled ideas around them.
We also watched a real clip of Mousehole, Cornwall, to help us picture the setting more clearly. Since then, we have explored how to spot ineffective sentences and had a go at improving them. We’re now full of ideas and can’t wait to see what happens next in the story!
After exploring a range of leaflets that persuaded us to visit exciting places in our local area, it was finally our turn to have a go at creating our own! This time, we were advertising something a little different… our very own circus! We had so much fun coming up with imaginative ideas to make our leaflets stand out, and we even tried to persuade Miss Bartram to come along and visit! While writing, we made sure to include key information such as the location, price, opening times, and what delicious food and drink would be on offer. We didn’t forget to add customer reviews, exciting details about the acts, special events, and any offers that might tempt visitors. Using short, snappy phrases, alliteration, and eye-catching language, we carefully planned how to grab the reader’s attention. We also thought about the bright, bold colours we could use to make our leaflets really pop!
