The Maya Civilisation 

This term, the children are learning all about the Mayan civilisation. We have started by looking at the Hero Twins myth that explored the origins of the Sun and moon, summarising this story into eight key stages.

The children continued their exploration of the Maya civilisation by looking at some creations from the time. The class then ordered these in terms of importance and how relevant they are in our society. 

The children explored the Maya number system and then some of the glyphs found on carved stone. They then created some of their own!

Today Walney learnt the rules of the Ancient Mayan ball game

“Pok-ta-pok”. It was extremely tricky to master, especially because using your hands, feet and head is not allowed.

Don’t worry, we didn’t play by official Mayan rules and the team captain of the losing team was not sacrificed by decapitation!
