Autumn 2
D&T Week - The Great Torrisholme Bake Off!
We enjoyed hosting an afternoon tea for our parents. We served them yummy homemade cakes and juice. It was a lovely afternoon!
After tasting our first plain batch to cupcakes. We decided to add flavours to our second batch. We made a mixture of different cakes, including: strawberry, lemon, chocolate, banana and vanilla. We are looking forward to sharing these with our grown-ups on Thursday afternoon.
The cooks in the kitchen have taught us all about food hygiene. We know to wash our hands before and after preparing food, to ensure the workspace is clean, to clean up equipment after use and to avoid mixing different foods up before they are cooked. It was great to see inside the kitchen.
It's baking time..... We made our first batch of cake mixture. We carefully followed the recipe and weighed out the ingredients. We can't wait to taste them tomorrow.
We made a cake board, where we looked at lots of different types of cakes including: flavour, size and design. We thought of words to describe these cakes and discussed how they might smell and taste. This gave us some ideas ready for us to design our own cakes.
We began our baking week by taste testing lots of cakes from the supermarkets. We use our senses to identify how the cakes looked, smelt, felt and tasted. We discussed the different flavours a cake can be and identified the ingrediants needed to make a cake. Overall the children thought they were very yummy.
In Maths, we have been looking at fact families. We have identified addition and subtraction number sentences.
We enjoyed our Science lesson this week. We have been discussing body parts and naming them. We then organised people in our class into groups based on their features. We discussed hair colour, eye colour, height and much more.
We have been exploring negative printing in Art. We used potatoes to make the negative style print.
Rock Kidz - We enjoyed the Rock Kidz session all about anti-bullying. We LOVED coming to school as rock stars and rocking to the anti-bullying song
We are Artists! We made our own printing blocks out of cardboard and string. We then explored making a positive print in our scrapbooks. It was so much fun! Take a look at our designs.
The Enormous Turnip was stuck in our classroom. The Farmer had left us a note and asked for our help to get the turnip out. We heaved and we heaved and out popped the turnip.
HISTORY DAY
We have been Historians for the day! During our History Day, we learnt all about Guy Fawkes and The Gunpowder Plot- it was so much fun. We were extremely lucky to have a visit from Adrian Warrell, who fully engaged us in Guy Fawkes stories and artefacts.
We also created our own timeline for The Gunpowder Plot and wrote facts about Guy Fawkes. We used the iPads to scan QR codes and research information on The Gunpowder Plot. In groups, the children built the Houses of Parliament out of large-scale construction materials and acted out the story of The Gunpowder Plot.
What a super day!
