Stories with Historical Settings
To begin the new year, Walney class have begun by exploring Alice in Wonderland for our topic of stories with historical settings. We started by readings the first chapters, where Alice follows the rabbit down the rabbit hole and struggles with being too small and too tall.
After collecting arguments for and against being too small or too tall, the children took part in a class debate.
The children created their next chapter of Alice in Wonderland and ‘published’ these with illustrations!

Film and Play Scripts
Walney class began their new topic of Scripts by acting one out! We first read through a scene, looking at how a script is laid out and the features and then put our new found knowledge into action. Following this, the children watched the corresponding movie scene their scripts were from (Wizard of Oz).

After finishing their write up of their scripts, the children performed some of the plays for the rest of the class!

Stories from Other Cultures
The children have begun this half term’s new topic by exploring a point part way through our focus book. The children used inference and retrieval skills to pick out key information to predict what had happened so far in the story. They then looked at an advert, picking out high quality vocabulary and again used their inference skills to determine what the company did and why this intrigued the boy.

The children analysed an extract from the story, Journey to the River Sea to determine key features they need to include within their own story.
