Forces
Year 5 started their new science topic exploring gravity, and how mass of objects is irrelevant to how fast objects fall. Following their experiments, the children discussed the role of air resistance in the differences in falling time observed.
After exploring Sir Isaac Newton and Galileo Galilei, Year 5 conducted their own experiment on surface area and its relationship with air resistance. The children created two parachutes of differing sizes and timed their falls.
As a culmination of our lessons on forces, the children were tasked with creating a boat that utilised air resistance and their understanding of water resistance. Lots of different ideas were tried with various degrees of success!
Materials and their Properties
Year 5’s first experiment for their new topic involved them testing a variety of materials to see which were soluble or insoluble (which dissolved and which didn’t). The children ensured their testing was fair by doing the same about of stirs and putting in the same amount of material.
Irreversible Changes are Chemical Changes where the original material cannot be recovered.
Cola and mint experiment
Investigating Irreversible Changes with bicarbonate of soda and different liquids.
The children explored which materials can be separated and how this can be done.
