Fractions
To explore fractions in maths, year 5 first looked at equivalent fractions and how we can use both the numerators or the denominators to do this.
We then looked at adding and subtracting fractions, building to do this with mixed numbers and ‘breaking the whole’. We continued this by finding fractions of amounts.
Number Day
As part of the National Number Day, year 5 took part in orienteering across the school grounds. They worked in pairs and small groups to answer various calculations.
Decimals
The children used place counters to explore the topic of decimals, including the thousandths.
Year 5 then related their previous knowledge of fractions to that of decimals, using a hundreds square.
