Autumn 1
As part of our topic of 'Blitz Britain', the children have been studying the work of war artists - in particular - John Piper.
We studied his paintings of Coventry Cathedral and, using his style, created some drawings of our own with a focus on bomb-damaged buildings.
We investigated achieving different effects using the medium of pencil, pen and pastels. We also became art critics in evaluating our own and the work of others.
The children loved our evacuation day. It started with their parents waving them off from the train station followed by a train journey to the billeting office where they found out who their hosts were going to be. The children then researched what life would have been like as an evacuee and wrote letters to their parents. It was wonderful to hear the children singing war songs throughout the day when they heard the air raid siren and they were absolutely brilliant during the make do and mend activity where they used darning to fix holes in socks.

Diving into our English text ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ by exploring the meaning of words in context. There were some outstanding discussions happening, which was brilliant to hear.

Exploring place value up to a million

Our ‘Best Part of Me’ writing proudly on display

The children couldn’t believe their ears when the first thing they were asked to do in Year 6 was to scribble on paper and they were even more shocked when told they had to tear it up, but they had great fun!
