To start Year 5, the children created their own doorways into an imaginary world. They took inspiration from films and shows they’ve seen, like Narnia, Harry Potter and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and wrote expanded noun phrases for both the door and world beyond.
Life Cycle Explanation Text
To start the unit, the children examined explanation text to gather who the texts were for, and the key features that indicated this.
The children looked at distinguishing between facts and opinions. In pairs, they read through a text, highlighting statements that were facts, and ones that were opinions.
To help with their writing, the children used IPads to research questions that could then be answered in the explanation texts.
The children have begun writing their explanation texts after forming a toolkit from an example piece.
Mythical Narratives
The children read through several myths and noted down high-quality vocabulary they could use for their own.
As a mini SPaG lesson and in preparation to include them in our writing, the children preachiness their use of speech punctuation.
The class then designed their own mythical beast, and wrote a descriptive piece all about it.
To form a checklist of features necessary for their own mythical narrative, the children picked out key features from parts of various myths.
Before writing their narratives, the children have created a boxed-up plan, using the Maya Hero Twins myth as a base. The children changed key details from this story.
Using all their hard work so far, as well as class aids, the children started to write their narratives.
After starting their writing, the children began editing their work so far, ensuring punctuation and grammar is correct. They also checked for all the features from their toolkits being present.
Science-Fiction Narratives
To begin this exciting new unit in English, the children became familiar with the story of ET, as this will be the story they write their own sci-if narrative from.
