Place Value
To begin Year 5, we started with a refresher on our place value knowledge. We used base 10 and place value charts to form various numbers of different sizes.
In addition to our normal maths lesson, we also use LBQ (login details and be found at the front of your child’s reading record). This online platform allows children to work through progressively challenging questions.
We continued with the topic of place value by using gattegno charts to find powers of 10 more and less than a given number.
Addition and Subtraction
The children completed LbQ to conclude their addition lessons. They made sure to use the column method.
To explore subtraction, he children first used place value charts and counters, exchanging one counter in a column for 10 in the next column to the right, I.e. one 10 is equal to 10 ones.
Square Numbers
To explore these types of numbers, the children used counters to make squares. They made sure there were no gaps present.
Cube Numbers
To make these numbers, the children applied their knowledge of square numbers to create physical cubes.
