Charles Darwin's idea of natural selection
We spent the afternoon learning about the life of Charles Darwin and how he 'rocked' the world with his theory of evolution. We learned about the different finches he discovered on the Galapagos Islands, which led to the idea of natural selection. We examined pictures of the different finches, learning how their beaks differed according to what they ate.
We then took part in a fun experiment, using pegs, clips and spoons to represent different beak shapes. The children had to pick up different 'foods' - sweets and biscuits - to see how the different beaks coped with variation in food types. It was great fun and we enjoyed eating the sweets afterwards!
