History
Our Morecambe Heritage Trip was a dazzling, sunshine day where we could really enjoy the beauty of the bay! Many thanks to Eleanor for leading the talk and helping us learn and to Morecambe Library for giving us a meet and greet space.
We started with a visit to the mural that is covered in symbols that represent the local area and we were very good at spotting them. “Beauty surrounds, health abounds.” The motto of the town that we could appreciate today.
Our first building was the Clock Tower where we learned about its use during the war with a big light on the top and also that it has a ladder inside for changing the time (and the bulb!) and making any necessary repairs. Then onto the statue honouring Eric John Bartholomew, or as we know him, Eric Morecambe. Along the prom, we could appreciate the surrounding beauty as we breathed in the warm fresh air until stopping at The Winter Gardens and comparing photos of it then to now. Did you know, there used to be a fish tank in the winter gardens that had an electric light in it? People used to visit to wonder at the light not the fish!
Next stop was The Midland and we were shocked by the original build design in comparison to the ‘new but old’ design we are familiar with now. The hotel was built but The Midland Railway Company who were linked to the Railway Station hence its name, location and design. Did you know, Morecambe Station was the first to become electric? It was such a popular destination that installing electric power to the trains was important.
We have learned lots, the children behaved brilliantly and we were walked so much the children said their legs were ready to fall off! Mrs Taylor has notched up 6000 steps on the walk so the children really have walked their socks off this morning! Well done, Lapwings, I am SUPER proud of you!
